Mostly Vegan

As I am sitting here, I am eating chocolate. It is Ghirardelli dark chocolate that I won at a ladies brunch this past weekend. I completely forgot about it until now. Dark chocolate is good for you, right? (Even if you eat half the bag? Probably not!)

Last night my hubby & I watched the documentary "Vegucated". In case you have never heard of it, it is a short film where three people from New York (who love and eat meat) are challenged to go Vegan for 6 weeks. The film follows their journey.

My diet mainly consists of chicken and anything I can microwave. I have little to no patience when it comes to food. I make my hubby food a week at a time and put it in little tupperware containers (his diet consists of chicken, pork, beef and eggs). That means I just have to make food for one - me. And I am not spending an hour making an entire meal for me.

I eat red meat only 2x-4x a year and it usually makes my stomach sick.

But...I have decided to try a mostly vegan diet. I say "mostly vegan" since I have about 40 Isagenix shakes left and I adore them. They fill me up and have great nutrients. Unfortunately they also contain a bit of milk.

Past the Isagenix shakes, I am going Vegan for the next month. I start tomorrow. Why? I am not going to sit here and preach about animal cruelty. My decision has nothing to do with animals (sorry cows!).

My reason is simple - I feel awful. My stomach has been getting sick almost every day. There was a time when I was sensitive/allergic to milk casein (the protein in milk) and I think it is bothering me again. I know my iron levels are below normal (this was due to the fact that I tried to give blood again...and failed...again). I am exhausted but I am not sleeping well.

So...starting TOMORROW (12/7/12), I go "mostly Vegan". I am going to stop eating meat and anything dairy (except the bit of milk in the Isgenix shakes). Which means I have to give up cheese and chocolate.

This has nothing to do with my weight (I have been a steady 140-142lbs for months now) but rather has to do with the way I feel.

I went shopping today and picked up veggies, fruits, whole wheat pasta, vegan spaghetti sauce and Luna bars. I have plans on adding bagels and natural almond butter to my list. I am going to print up a list of food choices for each meal and then stick to it! Hopefully at the end of the month, I have more energy and feel better.

  1. Oh wow! Keep us posted on how it goes... I have IBS so I totally understand being frustrated when food makes you feel ill! I do, however, LOVE almond milk. Try Silk Pure Almond Dark Chocolate almond milk. It has a lot of good protein (thanks to the nuts!) and it really tastes like you are drinking a chocolate bar. It's my favorite!

  2. My friends went vegan for similar reasons and say they feel great. I found out I have an egg and cow's milk intolerance so have not been eating those for several months. I do eat certain dark chocolate that is milk free though. Usually I look for vegan items to make sure there is no milk or eggs in it. If you live near a Trader Joe's they have a list that includes all their vegan items. You can download it off their website.

  3. Thanks Gabrielle and Theresa. I haven't drank milk in years due to my problem with milk casein. But I will have to try the almond milk if I get the chocolate craving :)

I've been up an hour so far and it is going great - ha!
